Goals

Assessed as a potential replacement for axe in the podcast and CYOA pipelines. Wanted: local LLM agents, tool-calling, TOML-style composition, tight Bun/TypeScript orchestration via spawnSync().

Effectiveness

Not adopted. Wrong shape for the job. GAIA is a desktop application platform; axe is a headless CLI. These are different tools solving different problems.

What it does well

Why it doesn't fit

No spawnSync() equivalent. Our pipelines call echo "..." | axe run <agent> from Bun. GAIA exposes a REST API behind a Lemonade Server + FastAPI stack. Invoking a single agent requires two background services to be running. That's the wrong primitive for a cron-driven batch pipeline.

Python only. No Go CLI binary. The pip install amd-gaia route brings in a full Python venv; the desktop installer is ~10 minutes. Neither fits a Docker multi-stage build optimized for binary size.

Hardware target mismatch. Built for AMD Ryzen AI NPUs (300-series). We're on generic x86_64 with Ollama. GAIA works without the NPU but the value proposition shrinks considerably.

Runtime routing, not design-time composition. Agent chaining happens via a routing agent that dispatches at inference time. axe's TOML config makes agent composition explicit, versioned, and inspectable without running anything.

Model management opacity. Lemonade Server abstracts model selection. We need explicit quantization control (gemma4:31b-it-q4_K_M, qwen3.5:27b) — GAIA's abstraction layer works against that.

When to reconsider

If we ever want an interactive front-end for agent conversations — document Q&A, voice interface, session replay — GAIA would be the right starting point. It's not a batch pipeline tool; it's an app framework.
